About the Foundation

Community Coming Together

Our Mission

The Mission of the Michaux-St. James Foundation is to promote for the benefit of the general public the preservation and improvement of historical, cultural and natural resources principally but not limited to Powhatan County, specifically the Michaux and Fine Creek Areas. This 501(C) is organized exclusively for educational, charitable, conservation, and historical preservation purposes.

Our History

The Michaux-St. James Foundation officially incorporated in 1999 as a federally-recognized non-profit, and charitable organization. At that time the Foundation was also registered with the Commonwealth of Virginia’s State Corporation Committee.

But the “foundation” has a history before officially coming into being as “the Michaux St. James Foundation”. The residents on and around Old River Trail had come together repeatedly before 1999 to tackle serious issues facing the community. Some of these issues included;

  • Planned construction of a 300-acre City of Richmond landfill on Old River Trail
  • Planned construction of another medium-security prison
  • Planned construction of the Dept of Correction Medical & Diagnostic Center
  • Planned construction of a major shooting range

All this turmoil and threat to the historical, environmental, and rural integrity of our community educated us to the need to create a vibrant and powerful community voice. Accordingly, we began an ongoing series of events and activities designed to engage residents in the northern part of Powhatan in civic and community efforts.
